Ramblings
I finally started a new blog. Hopping from the various blogspot addresses to wordpress, xanga and many others. =D The reason for starting a new blog again? I will be starting school soon!
What does that got to do with starting a new blog? Hee! Because, I will have alot of interesting stuffs to blog about, or when I am utterly bored with school life, I can pop by!
But actually, in those past few days, I have got alot of stuffs to blog about! Like really alot! But I am usually too lazy to create a new blog. =(
And you know, I have super short term memory! =( So can only blog about recent stuffs and pictures!
So, I can only flashback to Saturday or is it Sunday? I think it's Sunday! So on Saturday, my sister and I had this Dango competition. Headed down to Sembwawang Shopping Center Daiso to get the ingredients! More about the ingredients and steps of making dango later!
And before that, we headed to Ajisen to have lunch! I love it so much, just that the sushi's really not up to standard! The rice would just crumble and fall apart! Bad technique! But never mind, had Cha Shu (*cha siew*) ramen special set! I love it so much! =D I love ramen and not maggie mee "ramen" which most kopitiam insist. Been watching naruto so much, I have fallen in love with ramen! I know I know, more about naruto later.
So, after that super duper filling lunch, we headed to Daiso and bought stuffs! I love shopping in Daiso for all the useless stuffs. But this time, I kind of controlled myself and got useful stuffs! =) Got a super duper duper good to use brush which I insist is for horses, some scented water (*what is it called? I know it's reed something*) for the room, ben ben's carrier and ingredients for dango making.
Then cabbed home and started making dango! It's super duper yummy! =)
And the day doesn't end there! We brought ben ben down to the park to "gai gai" (walk the hamster*) using the "carrier' we bought from Daiso. But in actual fact, that "carrier" is an insect cage! But it's very useful and cute! It's a big green plastic container shaped into a camera and there are transparent glasses and slots! Very useful! So we brought him to Yishun Park to visit Jeet Jeet and Fat Fat. And also to let him breathe some fresh air and explore the place. Very cute! He is usually crazy and all, but inside his carrier and outside house, he is a very good boy! Sitting down and eating or just laying flat on the carrier looking out! Super cute!
That white thing isn't his poop! It's yogurt drops!
Walked him home after that! =) I love bring ben ben out for walks. Although he doesn't walk of course. We are the ones walking! I mean, fresh air is good for babies! Hee hee!
I totally forgot what happened on Monday, so we shall skip that alright!
Fast forward to Tuesday! For the whole day, we were cut off from the internet (*read: The WORLD*) and television! For some reasons, the antenna or something of the block have got some problem. Our neighbour came over to ask if our television was alright. =) We called Starhub thinking it was our problem and the replies from the helpdesk was totally disappointing! I mean, I don't mind if you can't offer a good/immediate solution to our problems, but no, I recieved no help from the "helpdesk".
Since we have time on our hands, we brought Ben Ben out to walk! We wanted to get chips too! =D And the internet and television came back at 10pm. I know, I am a technology slave. It's like being cut off from everything! But it wasn't to the extent of cold turkey or anything bad! Haha! But yea, glad it's all over! And our ben ben cannot live without television! He is a tv addict! We love him so much! Just like fat fat and jeet jeet! But poor ben ben can't get his weekend walks because my sis and I are heading to catch Liverpool in Singapore! =) Wondering if Yossi is going! But never mind about that! I am super excited! And kop stand tickets have got scarf! =) Excited! Just hope the weather's going to be good!
Dango Making
Okay, I just ended the above so abruptly! Okay, here comes the DANGO MAKING! I mean, you can just google "dango" and get so many different recipes! But I tried this and of course, I used some recipes on the net. But initially, it just turned out really bad. Like all hard and flour-ly taste!
Ohkay, take your pen and paper! Ingredient time!
Daiso: A packet of Glutinous Rice flour (*don't get the ones with dangos on the packaging. Get the glutinous rice balls ones*), red bean paste and also soy bean powder! That will be $6. Oh, and remember to get skewers if you do not have them.
Giant/any other supermarket: A 300gm silken tofu! $1 dollar. And get corn starch if you don't have them in the kitchen.
So, get these ingredients and you are ready to go! Cooking time!
Dango
The key to making the correct dough is to not follow all the recipe but follow your heart! So, slowly add in the flour and tofu. =)
Add bit by bit and knead knead knead. It's alright to have a little leftover of the tofu or flour. After you think you added the correct amount of ingredients, the dough should be a little dry to touch yet is still moist!
At this moment, add in about two teaspoon of cornstarch! And knead well! If too dry, add a little more tofu! It's a process of trial and error actually.
When you are done with the dough, boil water with a pinch of salt in the water.
While waiting for the water to boil, roll the balls! Well, I rolled them into balls and some are flat. I prefer the round flat ones.
When it bubbles, carefully place in the balls. And turn the heat lower, it's still bubbles, but not that intense.
Don't immediately take them out when they float to the surface. It's not cooked! Wait for about two or three minutes when they float before taking them out.
And when you take them out, place them into cold iced water. This prevents them from sticking! =) Then skewer them!
Then place them into steamer to steam for about two to three minutes! And you are done with the DANGO!
And now, we proceeed to another crucial part. Sauce!
Sauce
Well, you see, I never make those sauce they teach in recipe. The one with mirin and all because I have totally no idea where to get the ingredients so I just DIY-ed with the sauce and toppings!
To make things easy, get the ready made toppings from Daiso, which is the soy bean powder and red bean paste.
I personally like the red bean paste one! But on Sunday, I added another one which is the gula melaka one. I am not sure where to get that because we got it from Malacca. It goes so well with dango!
To make the soy bean powder taste nicer, add abit of sugar and mix well. Just roll the dango in the powder and you are ready to eat!
For the red bean paste, it's much easier, just scoop the amount you want and place it on top of the steamed dango!
And as for gula melaka, it's also the same, pour over the dangos!
Isn't it easy? If you made too many dangos, just keep the dangos in the fridge and steam them when you want to eat! I love it! Three sticks after meals is heaven!
Have fun!
